The NACDL Board of Directors recognizes, remembers, and honors Florida attorney and former president Neal R. Sonnett:
WHEREAS, Neal R. Sonnett, a distinguished member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and a towering figure in the legal profession, passed away in Florida on July 11, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sonnett served with distinction on the NACDL Board of Directors and held leadership positions in numerous legal organizations, including the American Bar Association (ABA); and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sonnett was a past president of the NACDL, the American Judicature Society, the Florida Bar Foundation, the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Dade County Bar Association; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sonnett was a tireless champion of justice, a fierce advocate, and a mentor to countless lawyers; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sonnett was recognized for his exceptional legal acumen with numerous awards, including the NACDL’s Robert C. Heeney Memorial Award, the ABA’s John H. Pickering Award of Achievement, and the Florida Bar Foundation Medal of Honor; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sonnett’s contributions to the criminal justice system extended far beyond the courtroom, and his influence will be felt for generations to come;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers expresses its deepest sorrow at the passing of Neal R. Sonnett; and that the Board recognizes Mr. Sonnett’s extraordinary contributions to the legal profession and his unwavering dedication to the principles of criminal defense; and that the Board extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Sonnett’s family and friends.
