Death Penalty

NACDL supports abolition of the death penalty in Nevada and all other states that continue to utilize it.

On April 1, 2021, NACDL submitted a letter to the Assembly Committee on the Judiciary urging the passage of AB 395, legislation to repeal the death penalty and commute current death sentences to life without the possibility of parole. On April 13th, 2021, AB 395 passed out of the assembly.

In May, 2021, NACDL created a social media toolkit, including graphics and accompanying social media language, highlighting the myriad reasons why the death penalty must be abolished in Nevada and all across the country.

On May 13, 2021, Governor Steve Sisolak issued a statement that AB 395 did not have a path forward in the State Senate. AB 395 had advanced further than any death penalty repeal legislation of the history of Nevada's state Legislature.
