Jennifer Small is a candidate for Director in NACDL's 2022 election, nominated by the Nominating Committee.
A national presence that is strong, progressive, and comprehensive is necessary in the practice of criminal defense. This is why I want to serve on the Board of Directors of NACDL. Coordinated advocacy, education, and connections are essential to upholding the mission statement of NACDL and I believe I can be of great use in the execution of existing strategies and the development of new strategies in the pursuit of justice. I have experience working alongside others in legal related organizations serving in positions ranging from President, President-Elect, Secretary, Board Member at Large, to General Member. I work well together with others and can also produce in an individual capacity. I believe NACDL is the golden standard for leadership in criminal defense. The ability to provide guidance on issues at the forefront of our field to practices, private and government, is massive. I served as a Deputy Public Defender (DPD) in Riverside County, CA for 15 years. Currently, I am embarking on a private criminal defense practice. From my time as a DPD, I know how important it is to be able to wage strategic attacks. I also know what it is like to not have the resources or support to do so. I want to be a part of NACDL's approach to providing resources, increasing outreach and membership, and to do so from a leadership perspective. I have attended several NACDL conferences over the last year, am currently serving on the Diversity Committee, and am confident I can be of great use to this organization.
