Addy Schmitt is a candidate for Director in NACDL's 2022 election, nominated by the Nominating Committee.

Thank you for considering my candidacy for NACDL’s Board of Directors.  I am an active and engaged NACDL member with a demonstrated commitment to working alongside NACDL leadership, staff, and membership to advance NACDL’s mission, raise the organization’s profile, and grow our ranks.

I have been a member of the Board of Directors since August 2018, when I was elected in a special election to fill a vacancy on the board.  I was elected to a full term in 2019.  Since 2018, I have been active on the Board, attending Board meetings, participating as a member of several important committees and task forces, and recruiting new members to the organization.

My goal is to support NACDL’s work in as many ways as possible.  Since joining NACDL as a member in 2014, I have attended at least two and, since joining the Board, more than two NACDL gatherings each year, including, for example, meetings and/or conferences in New York, Austin, San Diego, West Palm Beach, Miami, Phoenix, and Milwaukee, as well as the annual White Collar conferences held in Washington, DC and Santa Monica.  In addition, since 2017, I have been honored to serve as a member of the faculty and speak on a variety of topics at more than five NACDL conferences and seminars across the country, and I am currently co-chairing NACDL’s West Coast White Collar seminar scheduled to be held in San Diego in June 2022.

I have worked hard to serve NACDL in other capacities, as well.  Since 2016, I have served as Chair of NACDL’s Task Force on Discovery Reform.  As Chair, I have taken the lead on drafting NACDL’s formal comments on important discovery reform initiatives, including most recently NACDL’s model standing order and accompanying statement following enactment of the Due Process Protection Act.

More recently, I was honored and excited to be appointed by current President Martín Sabelli to co-chair the newly-constituted Strategic Litigation Committee.  I also try to be an active member of the white collar, women’s, and decarceration committees and to support the diversity committee’s programs and efforts.  Finally, in the past, I have served as amicus counsel to NACDL in order to advance our position in pending litigation.

I believe my work with and on behalf of NACDL in the areas of discovery reform, strategic litigation, and as amicus counsel has helped raise NACDL’s profile among important audiences, including federal and state judges, criminal law professors, advocacy organizations, practitioners, and the media, while also advancing NACDL’s policy initiatives and mission.  I would welcome the opportunity to continue and expand my service as a member of the Board of Directors.
