Good Time Credits

NACDL is working with Michigan Justice Advocacy to expand good time credit opportunities and reduce the prison population in Michigan. 

The Good Time Makes Good Sense Initiative is a project of Michigan Justice Advocacy, an organization for which NACDL is a campaign advisor. The initiative seeks to address the massive overincarceration problem in Michigan by allowing individuals incarcerated in state prisons to reduce their sentences through good time credits. 

Michigan is one of only six states in the country without any good time credit laws in place. While all 83 county jails have a good time policy available at the discretion of the sheriff, and individuals on probation or supervision terms can be discharged early after completing half of their probation or supervision terms (pursuant to SB 1050, enacted in 2020), no such relief is available to those incarcerated in state prisons.
